TRIZ is the Russian acronym for "Teoriya Resheniya Izobreatatelskikh Zadatch" translated into English as the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving. TRIZ was created in the former Soviet Union by G. S. Altshuller. Following the collapse of the iron curtain, TRIZ first emerged in the West in the 1990's. TRIZ is a set of tools that enables the user to systematically derive new breakthrough innovative ideas and solutions to technical problems on demand. In the West, we receive no training or education on how to think creatively or how to "think outside the box". We typically use the basic process of "Brainstorming" or wait for individual creative inspiration to try to identify creative new ideas or solutions. But instead of waiting for random inspiration for a new idea to occur to us, we can derive breakthrough solutions systematically using TRIZ. TRIZ was created from the study of large numbers of patents (over 3 million have been analyzed to date). Patent documents provide a vast source of information of creative solutions and the problems which they overcame. The analysis of the patent database led to the creation of TRIZ tools for problem solving. These tools enable the user to systematically produce breakthrough innovative ideas and solutions on demand. Who should learn TRIZ? Everyone! TRIZ is most commonly learned through introductory courses over a few days. Many Fortune 500 companies have active in-house TRIZ training programs with the purpose of trying to "catch up" on the missing part of their employees eduction (how to think outside the box).
